William Duff

William Duff(1810-1877) was the second schoolmaster to reside at Kirkcroft.
William was born in Keir Dumfriesshire to parents Robert Duff(1785-1837) and Janet Paterson(1791-1856). His father Robert Duff was a stone mason.

William had 6 brothers.
John Duff(1813-1898)
James Duff(1818-1890)
Thomas Duff(1823-1909)
Alexander Duff(1829-1917)
Hugh Duff(1832-1841)
Nicholas Duff(1832-1921)
and 1 sister
Janet Duff(1819-1845).

William next appears in the 1841 census living in Whitegate cottage near Keir and working as a schoolmaster at Keir school. The date for the census does not match up to the date of Williams birth. It could be that an earlier child of Robert and Janet had died and William was named after that child.
In the 1851 census William is living at Kirkcroft and working as a schoolmaster. He also works as the registrar for the Gretna area. He remains here until his death in 1877.

A report of his death in the “Dumfries and Galloway Standard” newspaper dated March 24th 1877 read as follows:-
“On Tuesday last, William Duff registrar for the parish of Gretna, was found dead in bed. He went to bed in apparrently good health the night before. Heart disease is supposed to be the cause of death.”
